The most important differences between a mechanical keyboard and a “normal” (rubber dome) keyboard:
- When a key is pressed on a mechanical keyboard, you can clearly feel that the keystroke has been registered. You feel the keystroke and hear (depending on the keyboard model) a more or less loud clicking sound. - The Cherry MX Brown Switches also have tactile*, tangible switching points, but they are silent: a middle ground suitable for both writers and gamers and ideal in offices where you don't want to disturb your colleagues.
- Mechanical keyboards are significantly more robust than rubber dome keyboards. The stable and rather heavy housing structure ensures stability and a low-vibration typing experience. Due to the design, the lifespan of a mechanical keyboard is very long, so the generally higher purchase price is worthwhile in this respect too.
- Many mechanical keyboards have N-key rollover, which means they can recognize a certain number of keys at the same time. This allows for simpler, quicker commands when gaming or working, for example.
*"Tactile" means a noticeable resistance that shows you when the switching point has been reached and the keystroke has been registered. With the Cherry MX Brown switches, this happens almost silently; with the Cherry MX Blue switches, there is also an audible click.
